Structural analysis of fuel injectors

Mar 01, 2025

As a key component in modern fuel systems, the precise structure of fuel injectors has a vital impact on engine performance, fuel economy and emissions.

Fuel injectors are mainly composed of needle valves, needle valve bodies, fuel injectors, control solenoid coils, return springs, filters and other parts.

The needle valve is a very critical component in fuel injectors. It is located in the needle valve body. When there is no current passing through the solenoid coil, the return spring will generate elastic force to push the needle valve tightly against the seat surface of the fuel injector, closing the channel of the fuel injector to prevent fuel leakage.

The needle valve body and the needle valve are precisely matched, and the matching clearance between the two is extremely small, generally between a few microns. This precise structure ensures that the needle valve can accurately control the injection of fuel.

The fuel injector directly determines the injection shape and spray quality of the fuel. Its internal flow channel is specially designed to spray the fuel into the intake manifold or combustion chamber of the engine in the best atomized state.

The control solenoid coil plays a key role in controlling the opening and closing of the needle valve in the fuel injector. When receiving the electrical signal from the electronic control unit (ECU), the electromagnetic coil generates a magnetic field, which generates an upward magnetic force to overcome the pressure of the return spring, thereby lifting the needle valve, opening the channel of the injector, and starting to spray fuel.

The filter is installed at the inlet of the injector. Its main function is to filter out impurities in the fuel and prevent impurities from entering the injector, thereby avoiding the needle valve and other precision parts of the injector from getting stuck, so as to ensure that the injector can work normally.

As the automotive industry develops towards high efficiency, environmental protection, and intelligence, the structure of the fuel injector is also being continuously optimized and improved to better meet new development needs.
